Chapter 16
Greg Spries might have occasion to travel to tropical climes for his work, but he never compromised on one particular thing, no matter what the weather. Gregâs toes never saw the light of day. His feet werenât exactly his best feature, and he never knew when he might have to sprint away from someone he was surveilling. His clothing was typically rumpled and in need of a good wash, but the running shoes on his feet were always top notch, making him look like a tourist on a shoestring budget. Concierges all over the world had looked down their noses at Greg, and he couldnât care less.
He let the valet park his rental car, and strolled into the posh lobby of the Golden Dollar hotel like he owned the place. Carrying a rumpled duffle bag as his luggage, the investigator claimed the key to his suite and headed for the elevator. Just as the doors slid shut, Pablo and one of his larger, more sinister associates entered the lobby and headed for the front desk rep that Greg Spies had just spoken to.
âGood afternoon,â Pablo purred, turning on the charm full blast. âMy cousin was just here, is there any chance that I can get a room next to him, or across the hall. That way weâll get to visit a bit before we head to the family reunion,â he showed his dimples and white teeth.
âLet me see if we have a room near Mr. Spries,â the young woman behind the desk returned Pabloâs smile, and clickety-clacked on her computer for what seemed like forever. âOh, weâre in luck,â she said finally, running plastic key cards through a machine. âYouâll be right across the hall. Heâs in 703 and youâre in 704. How are you two related?â she asked brightly.
âMy motherâs side,â Pablo lied easily.
His ruse had worked. From across the hall, heâd be able to monitor the P.I.âs movements merely by looking out his peephole.
âWould you like me to call and let him know that youâre on your way up?â the receptionist asked.
âNo thank you,â Pablo scribbled a signature to go with the fake ID that heâd given her. âI want to surprise him.â
âAwwwâ¦thatâs so sweet,â she tilted her head, either working hard for a tip, or flirting. âHave a nice stay, and please let us know if thereâs anything that we can do for you.â
âThank you so much,â Pablo slipped her a twenty, amused when her eyes lit up.
